Decarbonizing heating and cooling with cogeneration from renewable sources
Market and policy
Heating and cooling accounts for about 50% of the total energy demand in Europe, mostly produced by fossil fuels. Moreover, 9-10% of heating and cooling demand comes from district heating/cooling plants. Heating and cooling are at the core of the Green Deal, framework that aims to decarbonize this sector to meet the ambitious 2030 climate goals that have been set. In this context, cogeneration plays an important role as it contributes to a more efficient supply of primary energy and facilitates the use of renewable resources. Claudia Canevari invites COGEN Europe to increasingly promote the use of cogeneration from renewable sources, in order to actively contribute to the transition towards carbon neutrality.
