Energy efficiency and cogeneration

Climate change and emissions reduction. What is the role of cogeneration?

Doug Vine - Senior Energy Fellow, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions

The last 6 years have been the hottest in history and in 2020 alone, the United States has seen 22 natural disasters. What is the pathway to reducing emissions and fighting climate change? We asked Doug Vine, who considers that the road to follow is to reduce emissions into the atmosphere through energy efficiency, decarbonization of the energy supply and the use of renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels. Industry is certainly the most polluting sector and high-efficiency cogeneration is the long-term solution that can help with heat generation, while keeping CO2 emissions low. Moreover, cogeneration plants can be supported by other technologies to create microgrids and guarantee resilience, as well as being reconverted to be powered by hydrogen in the not too distant future.
