Cogeneration in Italy: good results but the public administration continues to lag behind

Vincenzo Gerardi - Researcher, ENEA

Thermoelectric power generation in Italy amounts to around 60 GW, 26 of which are produced through cogeneration. Regarding the type of technology, internal combustion engines are the most used, followed by gas turbine and combined cycle systems. Cogeneration plays a major role in the field of district heating, with a total power of about 880 MW. As far as high-efficiency cogeneration is concerned, major efforts are being made to use these systems in public administration’s buildings.
