Snapshot Survey 2020: stable growth of cogeneration in the EU and integration with renewables

Alexandra Tudoroiu - Policy Officer, COGEN Europe

In the last 5 years the cogeneration market has been stable and, to date, Europe has seen an installed capacity of 120 GW. Cogeneration currently provides 11% of electricity produced in Europe and 18% of thermal energy, but with a tendency for this to double by 2030. The Snapshot Survey, conducted on EU countries, with the addition of the UK and Turkey, shows that a growth trend was seen for about half of the countries involved in the survey (e.g. France, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia) while for others, the growth is stable or, on the contrary, it did not occur due to uncertain policies. Another data that emerged from the survey are the cogeneration supporting schemes, which differ from country to country, as well as the related challenges and opportunities. Finally, in many countries cogeneration is the technology chosen for district heating and in combination with renewables.
